Swimmers
(Exploring the depths)

The figure is surrounded by waves of subtle color, its emotional energy made visible. It is suspended effortlessly in a sea of blue and violet. She started to swim several years ago, and while doing her daily laps, she began to visualize fields of color. The real subject here is not so much her physical self, but rather the emotional truths revealed in this state of suspension and her dream-like dances with color.

Painting was my first love, and the area of my major in College. There is nothing like the medium of simple paint and canvas, or of paper and pastel to draw out the deepest, the most intense, or the most subtle feelings and moods. Nothing like it as a vehicle to represent dream or trance imagery. A way to make visible to the outer sight those interior landscapes, rooms, and inhabitants. And as I spend so much of my time furnishing the outer rooms with beautiful, tactile, “thingy’ things: beds, chairs, and sculptures, I am more deeply drawn to the inner spaces; and increasingly I meet up with situations that seek to be expressed only through painting. Perhaps, in full circle, I’ll one-day return to the passion of painting full time, just as I began.—HR
